Shave Biopsy

As a general rule, skin biopsies are extremely safe and complications are relatively rare; however, using appropriate post-biopsy care may further diminish the potential for complications.

1) Change bandage on a daily basis beginning tomorrow. Apply topical antibiotic with each dressing change.

2) Showers are permissible beginning the day after the biopsy, however, do not soak the affected limb(s) in a bath.

3) Keep bandages on while you shower and change them once you dry off.

4) If a scab forms at the biopsy site, leave it in place.

5) Continue with daily bandage changes until the wound has closed (usually 2-5 days).

6) Call your physician immediately if you notice any redness, warmth, discharge, or other signs of infection at the biopsy site.

7) Call your physician immediately if you experience significant bleeding at the biopsy site.

For washing, you may use gentle soap and water or gentle soap with saline solution. You can purchase saline solution or “wound cleanser” at the drug store.

DO NOT USE HYDROGEN PEROXIDE OR RUBBING ALCOHOL. ONLY USE NEOSPORIN WITH BANDAGE AS DIRECTED
