What is MLS Laser Therapy? How Does It Work?

MLS laser therapy is a form of treatment that stimulates the body’s natural healing processes, aiding in the reduction of pain, lessening of inflammation, and faster overall recovery time.

Beams of light energy are sent into the site of an injury, with specific wavelengths, intensities, and durations tailored to the problem at hand. When the light energy penetrates the area, it causes several beneficial reactions:

  • Blood flow to the area is increased, which also enhances the flow of nutrients, oxygen, and growth factors to damaged cells that need it. New capillaries can also form within the area, increasing the ability of blood to reach cells even further.
  • The dilation of blood vessels also increases the ability of the body to carry away excess fluids, helping to reduce inflammation.
  • Pain signals to the brain can be blocked, decreasing nerve sensitivity and increasing pain relief.
  • The body’s natural immune response is increased to the area, further aiding recovery.
  • Damaged cells are stimulated to accelerate or restart their repair processes.

In other words, MLS laser therapy can ignite working cells to do their jobs faster. Not only this, but it also delivers the tools they need faster, rushes junk out faster, and increases the number of “bodyguards” in the area!

All this is done without any external factors other than the light. There are no drugs or any preparations you must make before a session.

Treatment is typically performed via a number of sessions spread out over several weeks or months. The number of sessions is largely dependent upon the type and severity of the problem being treated. However, the effects of each consecutive session stack, meaning pain relief and positive results should continually improve over the course of treatment.

What conditions Can MLS Laser Therapy Be Effective On?

This form of treatment tends to work best on soft tissue injuries, of which the foot and ankle can suffer no small shortage.

Common sports injuries, sources of heel pain, and other soft tissue conditions may often see faster recovery and positive results when treated with laser. These include, but are not limited to:

  • Plantar fasciitis
  • Achilles tendinitis
  • Neuropathy
  • Arthritis
  • Neuromas
  • Wounds

While beginning treatment sooner is always the favorable option, that does not mean chronic problems do not respond to MLS laser therapy. The treatment has the potential to “reawaken” the repair process in even long-term injuries.

That said, not all conditions are best suited for MLS laser as part of a treatment plan. We will only recommend this option after a thorough evaluation leads us to believe it could be an effective route to take. Other non-surgical options may be better suited to your particular condition and needs.
